These are the Marshall's Mountain Bike Riding Tips:

I will attempt to collect a list of MTB riding tips to prepare people for the 24 Hour Bike Race.

I know it is tardy, if not, too late. However, there may be tips for everyone for now or in the future. They are not supposed to be hard and fast, either. That why the name is "tips" instead of "rules" or even "guidelines". Much like scratching yourself: Only you know what works best for you.

Also note that these links have been garnered from a variety sources and come with the standard disclaimer: You are not expected to do the advanced stuff when you first try these tips. The 15 year old BMX champion will know buckets more than most about how to manage a bike in the dirt.

As with most of the verbiage on the site, it will grow and is designed to be dynamic.

These are the gems from my recent research on the web about MTB riding:
  • Shifting weight from back to front is a "no brainer", but shifting your weight from side to side to navigate corners without berms takes a little practice. Picture the guys who race in motorcycles in sidecars and how the lean out for the corners.
  • Knowing the difference between bunny hops and endovers, etc and how to do them, is also useful to know. This requires lots of practice especially when trying to negotiate rocks and stumps and roots and ruts.
  • Momentum is your friend: Learn to take a flying start, this helps to negotiate most obstacles.
  • Look where you are going, not where you are or where you have been. A wise person once said "It's too late after it's happened."
